“Seek first to understand, then to be understood” –Steven Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Every year I pick one word that has been, intentionally or unintentionally, the center of my focus for the year. Each year, the word is one that has given me huge payoffs relative to it’s size. It’s hard to distill an entire year into one word, but this year one simple word has given me a huge opportunity for growth. The word of the year for 2017 is LISTEN
I realized something this year. I’m weird .
Ok, maybe weird is a bad way to put it. Let’s say I’m different . As a former athlete and someone who has had a lot of success athletically, my view of fitness and training is different from 95% of the population. For me, moving, being strong, and playing actively is a part of my life, and I find a lot of joy in that. I like to get outside and move. I enjoy the challenge of playing adult league sports. Staying fit is a priority for me because, on top of helping me stay healthy, it also helps me to maintain the confidence I have in that area.
In the last year however, our adult fitness membership at Advantage has grown and we are hearing much
different stories from those of you who come to us for help. Instead of stories about how much you enjoy moving or playing sports, we hear stories of how staying fit and healthy has been a struggle, or how you have been staying somewhat fit, but just don’t enjoy it the process. If weight loss has been a struggle for you, it can be challenge to get motivated to exercise knowing it might not help. We also hear stories of how being stronger would help you be more confident.
After this year I understand that the story that has played out for me is not typical, and know that by listening to the stories and viewpoints of those who come to us for help, we can gain a better understanding about the best way to help. It turns out, the way I was talking about fitness was completely foreign to the people we were trying to help the most. Listening has helped us understand more about each individual that comes through the doors, and that lets us know how to help and motivate them to get the best results of their lives.
Listening is a life skill and one we have honed this year more than any other. We realize that you have a different fitness story, background and viewpoint, and that listening will help us cater our message and training to fit you the best. We know now that it is more important to truly listen to what someone is saying, rather than thinking of what we will say next. This has been a huge part of our growth as coaches, and that’s why LISTEN has earned Word of the Year Honors at Advantage.
Hope you had an amazing 2017, and we look forward to an even better 2018!
